Williams Invitational

The men’s & women’s teams competed at the Purple Valley Classic, hosted by Williams College. It was a great meet with a total of 18 teams in each field. The course is also where the Division III NCCA Regional Championship will be held in November so the race gave all of our first years a preview of what to expect. Although the weather forecast predicted a 90% chance of rain for the day, the rain held off but the air was quite muggy and warm.

The men lined up first this week and once again, first year Michael Schmidt pushed a strong pace and lead the scoring for the Panthers. Mike came in 18th place , averaging under a 5:30 place for the grassy and wooded course. Senior Jack Wambach put together another outstanding race of the season and came in 24th place, also averaging under 5:30 for the 8 kilometers. Jack Terrett closed 7 seconds behind Wambach. Co-captains Rainey Johnson & Peter Murphy scored next for the Panthers which resulted in not only our top 5 scorers coming in the top 50 of the field but a tight 42 seconds separated our first runner from our 5th. Stanis Moody-Roberts (not Jer Korsh as listed in the results) had some help over the last 1200m from Junior Peter Hoffman. Hoffman took a very conservative pace for the first two miles and then picked off runners over the last 3. Both Stanis & Peter came in at 27:59. A tight 2 seconds and one runner came between Vic Guevara & Nat Nelson. Both Nat & Vic are having good, strong races thus far into the season. First year Sam Miller is learning more and more about the 8k distance and came through the finish next, followed by Chris Free. Donny Dickson charged through the last 300m of the race, essentially tying with 4 other runners in the field. He was awarded 91st place. Byran Dooley was lucky number 13 for the team followed by Will Ingliss and Bruce Hallett. Rounding out the team from Middlebury was Dan Kaufman (119th), Doug Debold (126th) Tyler Prince (129th), Kyle Courtney (133rd), Jeremy Korsh (167th), Ben Weir (174th), and Ian Sanders-Fleming (180th). A total of 205 runners crossed the finish line.
The men earned a very respectable 5th place, behind 3 nationally ranked teams and one division I team. The results were solid and promising, as the team continues to train at the height of volume & intensity.

The women lined up next but unfortunately, nagging injuries and a bad cold wiped out many of our runners. 10 members from the squad were relegated to cheering their teammates along.
Senior co-captain Alexandra Krieg had some strong competition in the front of the pack from the top runners from Amherst & Williams. Each assumed the lead at one point during the race but it was the Amherst runner who prevailed at the finish and Alexandra raced into 2nd place overall. She kicked a time of 22:30 for the 6 k. Claire McIllvennie moved past 3 runners going over a hill in the last mile coming in 6th place! Another first-year, Chelsea Ward-Waller from San Antonio adapted extremely well to the longer course and came in 3rd for the team in 15th place. Hannah Meier fought through a bad head cold well enough to get 19th place, followed by Georgia Wright-Simmons. Georgia was the 5th woman for the team and capped our points to 66. Sophia Spring came out of the first mile in the middle of the entire pack and then methodically passed runners for the remainder of the race, coming in 32nd. Margo Cramer had her ankle heavily wrapped, having sprained it at practice on Tuesday. She looked great though and was able to out-sprint a runner from Keene to come in 34th place. Erin Toner also put together another very strong performance coming in 46th. Having bounced back from a sore Achilles, first-year Jessi Stevens cruised through the line next in 56th. Kaitlynn Saldanha & Avery McNiff finished within one second of each other, followed by senior co-captain Hallie Fox. Hallie’s improvement in her races over previous years is outstanding and a great credit to her training and dedication. Amanda Lee and Jess Ward both successfully averaged under 7 minutes / mile over the 6k, coming in 79th and 90th respectively. Christina Kunycky, Julia Sisson, Katherine Gura and Olivia Cooney all streamed in next, followed by Kathleen Gill and Emma Robson.

The women’s 66 points gave them 2nd place overall behind Williams.

Once again, the parents set up tables and an enormous spread of food & drinks for the team, friends and family to enjoy. I am attaching a couple photo’s sent by Sophia Spring’s dad from this week and also a few from the Panther Invitational from Rainey Johnson's dad.
